On a beautiful morning filled with radiant blue sky, Kenny left us for a better place.

Today, October 7, 2007 Kenny passed away at approximately 7:50AM. As most everyone knew, this ended his seven month battle with cancer. Kenny passed away at home with his family, fulfilling his wish to be close to his family when his time here was through. His last days were filled with many friends visiting and reminding everyone why we all loved and cherished Kenny. These visits brought joy, memories and comfort to all.

The family has been truly blessed by loving and being loved by Kenny. He made peace with God and accepted his plan for a better place. We know that he is with his dad looking down and waiting for all of us to join him.

Kenny’s friends have been wonderful and are giving Kristy and the kids all the support that Kenny would have been so proud of.

Funeral arrangements are pending, as Kenny’s wish was a burial at sea. There will be a limited number of spaces available for family and friends, but for those who will want to share memories with Kenny’s family, a “beach memorial” will be announced in the near future to celebrate Kenny’s amazing life.

Kenny and Kristy were waiting to provide an update to all their friends, co-workers and all others who have shared interest in their situation, once they had met with the doctor. The last week of July Kenny had a MRI scan and they met with the specialist treating Kenny’s liver cancer on August 2nd. The news was good! The tumor on the liver had shrunk by about 33% in total mass. However, the doctor was concerned about the weight loss of 23 pounds since his last chemo treatment, though he was encouraged by Kenny’s recent physical improvement. He advised Kenny that they wait six to eight weeks before considering another treatment. Kenny and Kristy were both excited by the news and shared a joyful night out to celebrate. However, by the very next day Kenny began to feel very ill and was rushed to the emergency room early in the morning on Monday, August 6th.

At Hoag Hospital, new scans were performed and two small tumors were discovered in the brain. One tumor is in the middle of the brain while the other is very close to the optic nerve of Kenny's remaining good eye. The doctors are very concerned that the optic tumor could cause Kenny to loose his remaining sight. They have suggested radiation therapy to help curb the growth of this tumor. Kenny has been placed on heavy pain medication and both he and Kristy are now considering what should be the next step.

Kristy’s physical condition has also been tested during this stressful time. She has experienced more blackouts and migraines than normal.

This news, followed so closely by the one day of good news, has been devastating. So now you can understand why they have been unable to return phone calls and e-mails. They have had much to deal with during the past month and still remain overwhelmed at this time.

It appears that Kenny is in the last phase of his battle with cancer. Although the odds are not in his favor he still finds moments of joy and happiness and time to tell those around him how much he loves them.

I know there are many people who love Kenny and Kristy and would like to visit, but each day has new challenges. In order not to impose during difficult times and overwhelm them further, please feel free to call me instead for an update or a possible visit.

Please continue to send e-mails—even though you may not get a reply, Kenny appreciates them. If you would like to visit the family, please call or e-mail me, Heather Burrow at admin@kenandfamily.com, 951-809-1826 (cell) or 909-797-6927 (home).

Thank you again for your prayers, donations and well wishes. We will try to post an update when Kenny and Kristy have new information to share. Please continue to pray for Kenny, Kristy, Mackenzie and Cason.

Kenny received good news today regarding his first round of chemotherapy, after having a CAT scan on Monday, June 4. He was told today by his doctor that the tumor has shrunk slightly or at the very least not grown since his last PET scan. This was extremely positive news. Kenny has been scheduled for round two of liver infusion chemotherapy for later next week. Kenny is also being recommended for a new treatment not yet approved by the FDA. His doctor will try to persuade the FDA to allow Kenny to take this drug which offers a lot of hope in combating the other tumors in Kenny's body. All this in part because of the results he received today!

Ken had his first round of chemo about a month ago. The first few days were rough, but he has recovered and he has started surfing again and skating with his kids in the alley. In about two weeks he will go back in for tests to see if the tumor has shrunk. He thanks everyone again for the love and support and he is enjoying very much the emails from friends. Keep them coming.

Ken has decided to pursue a specialized treatment at the Kenneth Norris Cancer Center at USC with Dr. Weber and Dr. Daniels. He will have his first liver infusion on Friday, April 20th. They have informed him that there is a 40% chance that the tumor on his liver will be reduced through this treatment.

4.02.07

Ken is currently meeting with specialists to consider all options and layout a plan of attack against this dreaded disease.
